Planning for High School: Helping Your Child Take the Next Big Step
Choosing the right high school is an important milestone in preparing your child for college, a future career, and life beyond the classroom. High school sets the foundation for academic growth, skill-building, and personal development, offering students access to rigorous academics, hands-on learning, and enriching extracurriculars that match their interests.
At Rowe, we help students and families navigate this process with confidence. In eighth grade, school counselors work closely with families to explore high school options, align school choices with student goals, and support every step of the application process.
Understanding Your Options
Chicago Public Schools offers a wide range of high school programs designed to meet diverse student needs—from college prep and International Baccalaureate (IB), to STEM, fine arts, career pathways, and more. Each program has unique strengths and may include eligibility requirements such as grades, test scores, or auditions.
Families can use GoCPS and High School Bound to research schools, compare offerings, and apply to programs. Many schools host open houses, info sessions, and school fairs so students can explore options in person and find the best fit.
Selective Enrollment & Magnet Programs
Some CPS high schools have specialized programs with admissions criteria. Selective Enrollment schools require NWEA MAP scores, a separate entrance exam, and sometimes additional qualifications. Magnet programs may include auditions, interviews, essays, or other steps depending on the focus area (e.g., arts, IB, leadership academies).
It's important to meet all requirements and complete tests, auditions, or interviews before the GoCPS application deadline in mid-December.
